Paul Roundhill - photography

b.1955
1973 1977 studied art at Epsom School of Art and Brighton in 1976 began to document the new wave and punk music scene with the sense that by documenting and recording the performance I would somehow "affirm"  the defiant and fleeting event. It could then exist in the future. There was something magnificently futile about the early punk gigs as though an insect was attacking an opponent as big as a mountain and in that weedy determined insignificance was an irrestistable attraction impossible to ignore. I was conscious though that all my attention would have to be in those conditions it was hard to be sure of being in focus because most cameras had through the lense split-focus and I would effectively miss the gig by being engrossed on focusing and framing my shots I would gain future photos at the cost of experiencing the gig, thats how it was and getting all of the band in shot at the same time without any heads being cut off again could  be impossibly difficult as many of my results will prove. Without a wide angle lense or enough distance between us I would often have no option but to line up all the musicians from a place right in front of the stage amongst a melee of surging bodies only the to be blocked by a microphone obscuring the singers face. I could retreat to the back of the hall and end up with all the band in shot although in miniature or attempt an impossible angle at the side of the stage waiting for onee or more members to turn around and face my direction. A solo shot of the frontman could not be an option in my view - I wnted an action photo of all of them and it is for this reason that the best pictures I have were of  a single figure such as Iggy or Frank Zappa .
